What are the Canadian citizenship eligibility requirements?

If you are currently a permanent Canadian resident and have resided in Canada for at least 4 years d(1460 days) during the six years immediately before the date of your application, you may submit an application for Canadian citizenship.You must also be physically present for at least 183 days during each of four calendar years that are fully or partially within the six years immediately before the date of application However, you must also meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age*
  • Must not have any criminal prohibitions
  • Must pass the Citizenship Test and Interview
  • You must have met your personal income tax filing obligations in four taxation years that are fully or partially within the six years immediately before the date you apply

*Applicants for persons under 18 years of age must be made by the child’s parent, adoptive parent, or legal guardian, who is a Canadian citizen or applying for citizenship at the same time. Persons under 18 years of age still need to be permanent residents of Canadian; however, they a do not have to satisfy the three year requirement.

As part of the Canadian citizenship application process you must pass the Canadian citizenship test questions and interview. You need to:

  • Demonstrate that you are able to speak one of Canada’s official languages (French or English) and demonstrate language proficiency
  • Correctly answer the Canadian citizenship test questions regarding Canadian history, geography, political process and the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship
  • You must declare your intent to reside during the citizenship application process.
